Da Voar Redd Up

The Spring Clean Up started in Shetland in 1987 with 400 volunteers who collected 2000 black bags of rubbish from the shores. In 1996 there were 2800 volunteers and over 10,000 black bags were collected along with lots of bruck that would not fit in bags.
In the past the people of Shetland would recycle things found on the beach but that was in the days that most things were organic. As time went on inert rubbish built up causing eyesores in the landscape.

The Redd Up was done as a one off to clean Shetland up for the tourists. this one off has grown under the organisational support of the Shetland Amenity Trust
Now over 12% of the community join in making it probably one of the best examples in Europe.

Shetland Friends of the Earth decided to adopt the area leading up to the Nesbister Bod. The beach faces South so gets a lot of wind blown rubbish. It is also quite far from the road. The Bod can be seen in the background of the picture on the right while our solution to getting the bags off the beach is on the left.

It is only for one or two days in each year and as you can see above it does not matter if you are avoiding sinking in it, reusing it or carrying it across country ........ it put a smile on your face :-)
