The Aims of Brough Lodge Trust

  • To gain ownership of, and take responsibility for the house and demesne of Brough Lodge in Fetlar
  • To raise the profile of the history and significance of the house
  • To examine the possibilities of restoring the house and its demesne as an integral part of development within the island of Fetlar, Shetland.

The Aims of Brough Lodge Friends' Association
  • To liaise with Brough Lodge Trust in the production of a six-monthly newsletter
  • To help in finding the funds to produce the newsletter.
  • To work within the aims of Brough Lodge Trust.

The current phase of the project to transfer ownership of Brough Lodge to the Trust, and to set up and run the Friends' Association, is supported by Shetland Amenity Trust, Shetland Community Enterprise Network, and the Fetlar Development Fund.

How to join Brough Lodge Friends Association
If we are to restore Brough Lodge, we have a formidable task ahead of us, and would appreciate any help you feel you can give, both in terms of financial contributions and in terms of voluntary help. You can take part from anywhere in the world, and will receive our six-monthly newsletter keeping you up-to-date with progress. The newsletter also contains articles about the history of the house and the Nicolson family.

Of course, if you live in Shetland, you may be interested in taking an active part in the production of the newsletter. If you live further afield, you can also take an active part by sending us your comments or questions by e-mail, and the Trust and Association will do its best to answer your queries. Some of you may also have knowledge of the house and family and may wish to make written contributions to the newsletter.

If you would like to join the Association, the annual membership is £4 for adults (children £2.00). Cheques should be made payable to Brough Lodge Trust. For those of you sending money from outside the UK, I am afraid we are too small an organisation to have credit card facilities, and although we have researched the possibilities for sending money, we have been advised there are only really two options: to send cash, or to send it through a Bank Draft, which I understand could cost more than the membership itself. In some countries, you may have other options open to you, and if anyone has suggestions, we would be delighted to hear from you about it as we would like to make it as easy as possible for anyone wishing to join the Association from outside the UK.
