The Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races

9th - 12th Agust 1999

Organised by the International Sail Training Association and sponsored by Cutty Sark Scots Whisky Join the party at one of the world's most spectacular celebrations of sail, with over 100 Tall Ships gathering in Lerwick, Shetland.

Festivities kick off with BALTASAIL. The Baltasail weekend will take place from 6th to 8th August in Baltasound, Unst, affording an opportunity to view some the vessels participating in the Races as they navigate round the northerly tip of the islands, passing the historic Muckle Flugga lighthouse en route to Lerwick, calling at Baltasound.

FRIDAY, 6TH AUGUST

Guided walk on National Nature Reserve at Keen of Hamar to see unique geology and plants, organised by Scottish Natural Heritage.

Guided tour of north Unst, including Unst Heritage Centre to find out about traditional life and Unst Boat Haven where there is a collection of small traditional boats.

Guided walk to National Nature Reserve at Hermaness to see birds such as Gannets, Bonxies and Puffins, organised by Scottish Natural Heritage.

During the afternoon the sixareen, "Da Far Haaf", Shetland sailing boats and yoals will be on show at the Boating Club pier and you will be able to make a trip around the voe.

Tour to R.A.F. Fighter Control Radar Site.

Teams will be organised from crews, locals and visitors for football, netball or squash tournaments.

Cabaret dance with traditional Shetland music at Baltasound Hall.

Disco at Haroldswick Hall.

SATURDAY, 7TH AUGUST

Tour to south Unst stopping at the Up-Helly-Aa Exhibition, the Uyeasound Sheep Dog Trials where Shetland ponies and sheep can be seen courtesy of the Unst Show, also demonstrations of spinning, lace and Fair Isle knitting, continuing to Muness Castle, and a demonstration of peat working nearby, Valhalla Brewery and the Biot Experiment.

Seafood Barbecue at Baltasound Hotel.

Another chance to take a trip in the sixareen "Da Far Haaf", Shetland model boats and yoals, also sample traditional Shetland food, and locally brewed Auld Rock Ale, listen to traditional Shetland music, Skiffle music and rock music, buy a souvenir, take part in fun and games.

Geology walk organised by Scottish Natural Heritage.

Tours and sports as Friday.

Open air Music Festival at the Boating Club.

Traditional Shetland music at Uyeasound Hall.

SUNDAY, 8TH AUGUST

Service at St. John's Church of Scotland, Baltasound at 10.30 a.m.

Church of Scotland, Uyeasound at 12 noon.

Service at the Methodist Chapel, Haroldswick - Britain's most northerly church at 11.30 a.m.

Points sailing races in the afternoon.

1000 - 1900 Shetland Museum hosts a tall ships exhibition.

From 1100 Visit the world-famous "Spiegeltent" on Victoria Pier - a venue for good, live musical entertainment.

From 1100 Visit the entertainment areas at Holmsgarth and Fishmarket, Laurenson Quay. There's bars with a great programme of live bands playing throughout the event. Open until late.

From 1100 Maritime Area, Alexandra Wharf - for exhibitions of net mending, knot tying, traditional Shetland yoal building, photographic display of tall ship history in Shetland.

From 1100 Lerwick Fishmarket - an opportunity to sample Shetland's finest seafood.

From 1100 Friendly Ports Pavilion at Holmsgarth - a showcase of crafts and products from 'The Friendly Ports' - Saint Malo, Greenock, Lerwick and Aalborg.

From 1100 Street entertainers, traders and food stalls on all sites.

For the children - Captain Bullock's 40 minute street theatre show and a Giant Stilt Octopus!

Children's amusements and fair ground rides on Commercial Street. Also face painting on the quayside.

For the daring an opportunity to do a bungy jump.

1400 Opening Ceremony at Holmsgarth - welcome to the tall ships.
