ST MALO

Saint-Malo a friendly port worth a call . . .

Arial view of St Malo harbour

Since its founding by Welsh monk-navigator Mac-Law, one of St-Brendan's followers, Saint-malo has been the birthplace of generations of seafarers, who have been flying their city's flag high and far ever since. This spirit of adventure has always despatched its inhabitants to the remorest parts of the world. But Saint-Malo is also a privileged port of call. Medieval barks, privateers, brigs and cutters, Eastern Indies galleons, Tea Way clippers. Newfoundlanders, for centuries chose Saint-Malo as their home port, or were commissioned by wealthy local shipowners.

In 1999, the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race will start on the 23rd July, in consideration of the usual timing prerequisites but also of Rouen's major and highly publicised event L'Armada du Siècle that undoubtedly some of you will not want to miss. (9-18 July). In a friendly co-operation with Rouen's organisers, we are considering some kind of link event, or "feeder" parade all the way from the Bay of Seine to Saint-Malo.

Of course, those of you not planning on going to Rouen will be expected and welcome in Saint-malo from the 15th of July. The important thing to remember is that our port can accommodate you all with the best comfort and facilities, and a lot of fun . . . and food!
