Art
in all senses
IN A LITTLE under five months Lerwick
Harbour will be fluttering with canvas sails and the Speigeltent
will be sitting proudly on Victoria Pier, writes Mary Smith.
The focus for a very special Shetland Arts Trust project, it
will bring together the visual and the musical, creating an atmosphere
to stimulate all senses. The large, art nouveau mirrored tent
will be the venue for non-stop live music by Shetland musicians.
Many of these same musicians will feature in paintings by Fife-based
artist Richard Wemyss. An exhibition of this work opens at Bonhoga
Gallery, Weisdale Mill on August 7th. A minibus will take visitors
and crew members from the Spiegeltent to the gallery, at Weisdale
Mill.
As an accompaniment to the paintings, local musicians have recorded
a CD called "Under Canvas". Journalist and broadcaster
Tom Morton is responsible for the "Notes Between Canvas"
- he has written a book on Shetland music and musicians, "Da
Vaam o'da Skynbow, which will be published in August by Shetland
Library. A set of cards featuring the musicians in Richard's
paintings will be printed to accompany the exhibition. All these
facets come together on August 7th under the title "CANVAS".
The Spiegeltent will be open from 11am until late from Monday
9th until Thursday 12th August.
We are now canvassing your support for this exciting event and
hope that crews, visitors and all of Shetland will join us in
a celebration of Shetland music through art. The exhibition will
be on at Bonhoga Gallery throughout August before heading south
on a tour of mainland venues.
Be
inspired
SHETLAND Arts Trust wants to hear from painters, photographers
or printmakers who are inspired by the tall ships' visit to capture
this truly unique event for posterity. Could the majesty of the
ships, the crew members and visitors from near and far, the fun
of the events and the quayside attractions touch you? Bonhoga
Gallery is hoping to include an artistic impression of the Cutty
Sark Tall Ships' visit to Lerwick as a show in the touring exhibition
programme for 2000. Interested parties should contact Bonhoga
Gallery on 01595 830400
A
bit of culture
IF YOU are out and about around Shetland during the tall ships'
visit and want some cultural input, then take in the classical
buildings of Europe captured on silk and hand-made paper by Katherine
M. Harris on display at Sumburgh Airport.
Step into some Funky Little Shorts - screen prints of sailing
boats and harbour scenes ñ at the Peerie Shop Cafe. Prints
and embossed works by Mike Waight can be seen at the Whalsay
Leisure Centre; folk tale-inspired screenprints by Simon Fraser
are on show at the Unst Leisure Centre and local artist Judy
Campbell's exhibition "Contemplation" is on at the
leisure centre in Mid Yell.
