Muckle
fun in Unst
POLISH ship "Pogoria" is heading
north to Unst for a right Shetland welcome. The A class barkentine,
built in Gdansk, will be among the fleet of vessels sailing up
the west of Shetland and around Muckle Flugga as part of the
island's special nautical weekend Baltasail. The Cutty Sark fleet
has been invited by the community to join in the festivities
from August 6th to 8th. The main action will be in Baltasound,
but events are planned throughout Unst. Organisers are hoping
to see local yachts, fishing boats and other craft among the
visitors. They are also preparing for an influx of yachts from
across the North Sea in Norway. A host of activities has been
planned to keep the visitors entertained, including yoal trips,
exhibitions, guided walks, tours and demonstrations of spinning,
knitting and peat working. Leaving hardly time to draw breath,
the evenings will bring traditional music, discos and an open-air
music festival. For more information contact
Pretty
Maids all in a row
GUARANTEED to get folk talking about old times (or even old-timers
talking about folk) will be a Shetland Model boat display, which
is being put together by Leslie Moncrieff, from Tingwall.
He hopes to beg, borrow and acquire around 15 boats to show the
history of both working vessels and racing models, including
Maids, in Shetland. They will span the century, with examples
from the late 1880's right up to the nineties. Mr Moncrieff wants
to represent different areas of Shetland as well as various builders.
The display, which will include brief histories of each vessel,
will be set up outside Alexandra Buildings in the Maritime Exhibition
Area. Tammy Isbister, from Trondra, Willie Mouat, from Haroldswick,
and Ian Best, from Fair Isle will be nearby, demonstrating the
very special art of yoal building. It should be the perfect place
for a yarn.
Local fishermen will also be there, showing off their net-mending
and knot-tying skills - and encouraging less nautically-minded
souls to give it a try.
