September 1995 With pressure consistently low over the greater part of England and the Central North Sea, much of north-east Scotland had a very wet first half to September as a sequence of frontal systems became slow-moving over the area. By the 11th - with over 220 mm of rainfall - Aberdeen had already had its wettest September on record. By the same time Kinloss was reporting its wettest month ever. In the twenty-four hours up to 09 GMT on the 11th Kinloss had 68.9 mm of rain, while on the other side of Scotland - in the 'shadow' of the mountains - Tiree had 11.5 hours of sunshine! Other than two wet days on the 1st and 2nd, Fair Isle fared much better - the frontal systems not pushing much further north than Orkney. However, with winds regularly from a south-east direction - bringing mild and moist air northwards - fog and low stratus was frequent at this time. After the middle of the month, as pressure began to build to the west of the UK and over Scandinavia, the main area of low pressure was pushed southwards and a weak cold front moving south on the 19th introduced cooler, clearer weather to the north. The 23rd saw a breakdown in the relatively settled conditions, with the first major depression of the autumn tracking north-east through the Faeroe-Iceland area and bringing an unsettled, windy end to the month with severe gales at times. Temperatures, which had been above average all month, then fell to well below average - with sleet observed on the last four days. Aurora was seen on the 5th, 20th, 27th, and 28th but, other than the 5th when a bright arch was seen, only a glow in the northern sky was observed on the other nights.
