Weather Diary - April 1999

  1. Moderate halo in the afternoon

  2. Dense fog all morning, clearing to mist 1420 UTC.

  3. The Davis shows a 10.2° Celsius max just before 1000 UTC with a corresponding drop in RH to 70%. Lasting some 25 mins this seemed to be associated with a period when the wind was around 090° at a 14kt mean.

  4. Fog by dawn, thick from 0650 UTC, thinning during the late afternoon and clearing to mist during the evening.

  6. Thick fog by morning. F - f 0620 - fp 0925 - jf 0935 - f 1010 - m 1120 - f 1330 - F 1340 - f 1420 - m 1520 UTC, visibility then improving to 20 km by 1800 UTC.

  7. Mist - fog 1220 UTC with 900 m visibility as stratus base lowers. Fog - mist 1140 UTC, improving to 50 km during the afternoon as wind veers NW'ly.

  8. Fog during the morning thinnining to mist 1430 UTC - fog 1500 - mist 1610 UTC. Decrease in mean wind speed at 2315 UC from 240° 24 kt to 210° 9 kt.

  10. Gale 2050 - 2230 UTC.

  11. 0522 UTC wind veer 300° to 330° in moderate rain and hail shower. Further hail showers during the morning followed by rain late afternoon.

  12. Overnight rain clearing at 1025 UTC. Rain and snow shower between 1500 - 1600 UTC. Further wintry showers of rain and snow and small hail during the evening.

  13. Snow and snow pellet showers overnight with further snow pellet showers during the day, occasionaly moderate at times leading to a temporary deposit of thawing pellets.

  14. Overnight wintry showers of rain and snow and small hail - leaving an occasional temporary deposit of thawing ice - dying out during the morning. Further rain showers with some small hail during the afternoon with a moderate halo at times.

  16. Overnight rain and snow and small hail showers. Moderate halo at dawn. Snow and small hail showers during the morning, moderate at times, bringing the visibility down to 1500 m. Moderate snow shower in the afternoon reducing the visibility to 1200 m followed by the wind 340° backing 300° and increasing 16 kt gust 27 kt at 1400 UTC later veering 010° and easing back to 06 kt after 1430 UTC as another shower passed over the NE of the isle. A very strong auroral arch with curtains and rays observed 2300 UTC onwards. The arch was quite high (45° at max) with rays to the zenith. Activity covering some 60% of the sky.

  17. Light showers of snow and snow pellets overnight.

  18. Occasional showers of rain and small hail early and late.

  19. Overnight snow showers dying out during the morning.

  20. Showers of rain, rain and snow and snow during the afternoon. Outbreaks of rain from 1940 UTC.

  21. Heavy overnight rain with ESE'ly gale 0200 - 0655 UTC, with gust to 64 kt at 0435 UTC. Precipitation, becoming light and turning to rain and drizzle by 0600 UTC, ceased 1130 UTC. Visibility, falling to 2800 m by morning, gradually reducing to 1700 m by afternoon and 800 m late evening as extensive low stratus lowered to station level.

  22. A dull, misty day with extensive low stratus. Rain and rizzle dying out during the morning. Visibility 2500 m at best but falling to 150 m at times in fog.

  23. Overnight rain then a clearance from the south soon after 0700 UTC to give a sunny day.

  24. Clear at first but overcast with low stratus after overnight rain. A misty day with periods of rain and drizzle with extensive low stratus. Visibility generally 06 - 10 km, but with fog during the evening as stratus base falls to station level.

  25. Overnight fog thinning to mist 0520 UTC with low stratus then rapidly clearing to give a sunny morning and afternoon with the visibility improving to 6 km for a time before reducing to 4500 m. Rapid increase in stratus at 600 ft after 1630 UTC - the stratus thin with continuing weak sunshine. Thick fog by midnight.

  26. Thick, or dense fog early and late with a fine sunny day. Fog cleared to fog patches 0730, clearing 0820 UTC and returning 1820 UTC.

  27. Overnight fog thinning to mist 1055 UTC as fog lifted into low stratus - fog 1105 - mist 1125 UTC. Some drizzle during the afternoon and evening.

  28. Fog overnight. Visibility varying 150 - 800 m 0600 -0700 UTC as stratus base varies. Fog clearing after 0800 UTC.

  29. 0635 UTC wind veer 150° to 200°. Rain and drizzle with thick overnight fog, clearing to low status 1230 UTC. Mist - fog 1420 UTC, clearing early evening as cloud breaks from the west after 1830 UTC to give some evening sunshine.

  30. Rain showers during the morning.
