Weather Diary - January 1999

  1. Becoming dry overnight, but remaining misty with visibility around 4000 m extensive low stratus. The cloud lifting and breaking during the morning to some bc (no sun due to the low angle), but remaining hazy with the visibility improving to 12-15 km. An occasional light shower during the afternoon. The wind, F5 SE'ly for much of the period increasing F6-7 during the evening. A mild day.
  2. Dry and cloudy overnight with a F7 SE'ly wind. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle from 0700 UTC with the visibility falling from 15 km to 4500 m. Precipitation becoming continuous until 1120 UTC. A dry afternoon, but remaining cloudy. Rain and drizzle from 1640 UTC, moderate at times but turning showery by 2100 UTC with the SE'ly F6-7 wind - gusting to 51 kt during the late morning - veering S'ly by that time. Continuing mild.
  3. Broken cloud and an occasional light shower overnight with a F6 S'ly wind easing F5. A dry morning with increasing high cloud thickening to medium level cloud for a time, before becoming all but cloudless by noon, the wind veering S to SSW'ly and increasing F7. Stratus rapidly spreading in during the afternoon, with a period of rain - moderate at times - 1405-1640 UTC. A dry evening, becoming virtually cloudless for a while before medium level cloud spread in later in the evening with the wind backing SSE'ly and easing F5 by midnight. The visibility was generally 20-25 km, but falling to 3000 m in the afternoon precipitation. Becoming cooler during the afternoon.
  4. The F5 SSE'ly wind veering S'ly and increasing gale F8 0200-0405 UTC, gusting 50 kt at 0346 UTC. Moderate rain overnight becoming light rain and drizzle by 0600 UTC before turning showery by 0900 UTC - the visibility improving from 12 km to 15 km. The cloud briefly becoming broken, with the visibility improving further to 25 km before altostratus quickly spread in from the southwest bringing further outbreaks of light rain during the morning. The rain then turning showery by early afternoon as the F6-7 S'ly wind veered SSW'ly. Becoming dry during the evening with well-broken cloud, the wind veering W to WNW'ly and easing F4 for a time before increasing F5 later. Visibility good at around 25 km, but falling to 15 km in the showers.
  5. Showers, developing overnight, dying out by morning as the F5 W'ly wind eased to a F2. Remainder of the day dry with variable amounts of low cloud but extensive medium level cloud. During the morning and early afternoon the F2-3 wind backed SW'ly, falling calm or F1-2 SSE'ly during the evening with continuous light rain by 2100 UTC. Visibility 30 km at first falling to 15 km in the evenings rain.
  6. Overnight rain, moderate at times, clearing by 0800 UTC with calm conditions replaced by a F3 NE'ly wind. Then a fine, dry day with 30 km visibility in a F4 N to NNE'ly wind, and well broken cloud for much of the time. Some mainly light showers during the evening, the wind backing NNW'ly.
  7. Dry with variable amounts of cloud and a F3 NW'ly wind overnight, the wind falling calm or light and variable during the morning. Cloud often well broken with sunny spells during the day despite scattered showers, developing during the morning, persisting through to the end of the day. A F2-3 ENE'ly wind developing during the evening, increasing F4 and veering ESE'ly for a time before backing F2 NE'ly by midnight. Visibility 30 km to 40 km, reducing to 20 km in the showers. A cooler day.
  8. Showers of rain and snow and small hail, with a F2-3 NNE'ly wind, dying out overnight with the wind backing N to NNE'ly. Small amounts of snow and hail on the ground (<50%), with a ground frost, by dawn, this soon melting in the late morning sunshine. A fine, day with 40 km to 50 km visibility, little cloud and adjacent showers visible but the island remaining dry. A moderate aurora arch visible low above the northern horizon during the evening.
  9. Well broken cloud and scattered wintry showers with a F2-3 N to NW'ly wind overnight leaving some snow/hail deposits (<50%) on the frozen ground by morning. A cold day with further occasional wintry showers of rain, small hail and snow, the wind backing SW'ly during the morning, falling calm for a time in the afternoon before increasing F4 NW to N'ly later in the afternoon. Visibility generally 30 km to 50 km, but falling to 15 km to 20 km in the lighter showers and to 1200 m in a moderate shower of rain, hail and snow during the early afternoon. A dry evening with clearing skies and the wind falling calm. No aurora visible despite being cloudless by midnight.
  10. Clear, calm and frosty overnight. Moderate showers of small hail and snow developing after 0300 UTC, with a F5 NW'ly wind, by 0600 UTC. Further wintry showers during the morning, the afternoon becoming dry and sunny with the NW'ly wind veering N'ly, easing F3 during the afternoon and falling calm by the end of the period. Visibility 40 km, but falling to 4000 m in the showers.
  11. Dry and frosty overnight with a F1 NE'ly wind backing and increasing F3 S'ly by 0600 UTC. Wintry showers of rain, hail and snow developing by 0900 UTC - the first shower leaving a thin glaze on frosty surfaces. The wintry showers continuing during the afternoon, the wind backing SE'ly and increasing F5. Low level cloud generally remaining well broken, but high cloud increasing and thickening during the afternoon resulting in a strong halo. The visibility of 40 km to 60 km little affected by the light showers. Dry for much of the evening, with a light shower of small hail just before midnight, by which time the SE'ly wind had increased F6-7.
  12. Overnight wintry showers turning to continuous light rain by morning as broken lower cloud was replaced by thickening and lowering medium level cloud, the visibility falling from 30 km to 10 km. The SSE'ly wind increased gale F8 at 0210 UTC and severe gale F9 from 0700 to 0745 UTC with the gale easing F7 at 1130 UTC. The rain, with a little snow during the morning and the visibility falling to 3000 m in the precipitation, became light and intermittent for a time during the early afternoon as the wind eased F5 and veered S'ly. The rain finally ceased soon after 1600 UTC, the wind then veering WSW to W'ly and easing F3. A clearer evening with scattered rain showers and 30 km visibility.
  13. Scattered rain showers overnight, the F3 W'ly wind backing SW'ly and increasing F4. A dry morning with 30 km visibility, the SW'ly wind increasing F5 and backing SSW to S'ly by midday with increasing and thickening high and medium level cloud. Rain and drizzle during the afternoon, moderate at times with visibility falling to 10 km, with the wind backing SE'ly and increasing F6. The rain ceased during the evening, the wind easing F4, later veering SW'ly.
  14. Rain turning to showers overnight, the F4 SSW'ly wind veering WNW'ly and increasing gale F8 0350 - 0405 UTC. A showery morning, with a F6-7 W'ly wind and some hail in moderate showers. The showers dying out for a while with the wind easing F5 before backing SSE and increasing F6 late afternoon. Medium level cloud rapidly thickening with moderate rain and snow from 1620 UTC. Wind veering W'ly and increasing F6-7 during the evening with wintry showers, some moderate, of rain, snow and hail.
  15. Broken cloud and rain showers overnight. A F6 WSW wind backing SW and easing F5 by morning. Rain from 0740, moderate at times, with the wind backing SSE to SE'ly and increasing gale F8 at 0920 UTC. Precipitation becoming intermittent early afternoon as the wind veered SSW'ly and decreased F7 to gale F8. Cloud breaking after 1500 UTC. Some wintry showers of rain and hail mixed during the evening with a continuing F7 to gale F8 SSW'ly wind. Sky becoming well broken by midnight.
  16. Well broken cloud overnight, with scattered wintry showers and a continuing gale F8 SSW'ly wind - temporarily easing F7 0425 - 0510 UTC. A gust to 53 kt at 0122 UTC. A cloudier morning with occasional showers of small hail or snow. Dry during the afternoon, with further showers of hail, rain and snow during the evening.
  17. Dry overnight with well broken cloud, the SSW'ly gale easing F7 0235 UTC but increasing gale F8 0840 - 1125 UTC. Rain showers, developing during the morning, becoming moderate at times during the afternoon and evening. Wind veering SW to WSW and easing F5 by evening.
  18. The showers dying out and the wind backing SSW'ly F5 overnight. High and medium level cloud increasing and thickening during the morning, the wind backing SSE'ly and increasing F7 by mid afternoon, and gale F8 1610 - 2020 UTC. Light rain from soon after 1700 UTC, becoming moderate for a time during the evening, ceasing by 2100 UTC - the wind veering SSW'ly F7 by the same time. During the precipitation the visibility fell from 25 km to 15 km. A few scattered light showers developing later in the evening, the visibility improving to 30 km.
  19. A dry day apart from a few early overnight rain showers, the cloud remaining well broken for much of the time, but with medium and high level cloud becoming extensive for a while during the morning and first part of the afternoon. A reasonably mild day with a F6-7 S to SSW'ly wind, increasing gale F8 0555 - 0610 UTC. Visibility 25 km.
  20. A dry night with a F6-7 SSW'ly wind. Clear at first but becoming cloudy by 0600 UTC, cloud layer breaking for a time during the morning to reveal increasing and thickening high cloud. A dry morning, apart from a light shower around 0800 UTC, with the wind easing and backing to be S'ly F3 by the early afternoon and later becoming F2-3 S to SE'ly. Amounts of lower cloud remained small, but the medium level cloud continued to lower with rain, intermittent at first, from 1520 UTC and becoming moderate for a time during the early evening. The rain ceased about 2000 UTC, at which point the wind veered from S'ly to SW'ly, increasing from F3 to F4. Some further light rain later in the evening. Visibility 20 km to 30 km.
  21. Some mostly light rain overnight, but the sky almost cloudless by 0600 UTC - by which time the wind had veered W'ly and increased F5. A dry morning with variable amounts of cloud and a F4-5 SW to WSW'ly wind. A line of CB was observed to the W at midday, and these gradually approached the island. At 1217 UTC the wind veered 220° to 250° with an increase in mean speed from 18 kt to 25 kt and a gust of 32 kt. A light shower accompanied this change in wind. During the afternoon there were further showers, some moderate and of rain and snow with the wind SW to WSW F4-6 with gusts to 37 kt. It also became a little cooler, the temperature falling from an overnight 6° Celsius to 2.3° Celsius in the showers. At 1952 UTC there was a gust, in a shower, to 45 kt from a mean of 24 kt accompanied by a veer in direction from 240° to 260°. During the showers visibility fell from 30 km or 40 km to 15 km.
  22. A showery first half to the day, some moderate with small hail, accompanied by a F5-6 WSW'ly wind. During the morning, as medium level cloud thickened in, the showers died out and the wind backed SSW'ly. Rain commenced at 1110 UTC, although for much of the afternoon this was rain and drizzle. The precipitation, moderate at times, ceased at 1630 UTC. Showers developed during the evening, these later turning wintry with small hail. Visibility around 20 km, falling to 10 km in precipitation.
  23. Overnight the wind backed SSW'ly and eased F4 with the showers dying out by morning. After 0600 UTC the generally cloudy skies became clear for a time after 0600 UTC before increasing high cloud -soon thickening to medium level - brought rain from 1035 UTC, this turning moderate from 1150 UTC. By this time the wind had backed S'ly. A wet afternoon with a F5-6 S'ly wind and the visibility falling to 12 km in the precipitation. Becoming showery after 2100 UTC, the wind veering SSW'ly and increasing F6.
  24. Overnight rain turned to showers as the SSW’ly F6 wind veered W'ly and increased gale F8 0215 UTC and to severe gale F9 0250 - 0305 UTC, with gust to 55 kt at 0253 UTC. Some moderation then, but a further increase to gale F8 0455 - 0535 UTC and 0705 - 0830 UTC. After 0830 UTC the showers were of small hail and rain and from 1110 UTC also included some wet snow. Showers died out during the afternoon, the cloud becoming well broken and the wind easing F5 and later backed SW'ly. Visibility 30 km, but falling to 15 km in showers. Despite a thin altostratus overcast by 2100 UTC a strong aurora glow was visible during the late evening.
  25. A dry night with extensive thin medium and high level cloud and a F3-4 SW to W'ly wind. Some light showers during the morning, dry for a time after midday but then further light showers later in the afternoon - these becoming moderate at times in the evening. Wind backing SSW'ly through the afternoon and easing F3 later. Visibility 30 km to 40 km, falling to 20 km in showers.
  26. A cooler, showery day with frequent showers - mainly light at first but becoming heavier and prolonged late morning and early afternoon. Some of the showers were wintry with small hail and rain and snow. F2-3 winds, veering N'ly overnight, veered N to NNE'ly during the afternoon before backing N to NNW'ly late evening. Gust to 28 kt in moderate rain, small hail and snow shower late evening. Visibility 30 km to 40 km.
  27. Further wintry showers overnight, some moderate, dying out by 0600 UTC but leaving a thin (<50%) deposit of melting snow and ice on the frozen ground. A cool, dry morning with scattered CB and adjacent precipitation. Light rain shower early afternoon, then increasing and thickening high and medium level cloud. A F3 N to NNE'ly wind overnight becoming light and variable during the afternoon and then backing F2-3 SE to ESE'ly in the afternoon and increasing F5 later. Visibility 30 km to 40 km.
  28. A cloudy day with a light rain shower during the morning and more frequent rain showers later in the evening. The wind a F3-4 ESE'ly veering SE to S'ly in the evening and SW'ly later. Visibility 30 km to 40 km, falling to 15 km in the showers.
  29. A mild, cloudy day with some rain showers overnight, patchy drizzle during the morning and rain and drizzle in the evening. A SW to WSW'ly F2-3 wind at first, backing SSW'ly in the afternoon and veering WSW'ly late evening. Visibility 30 km at first, falling to 20 km late morning. Some stratus developing in the afternoon, becoming low and extensive by evening with fog by 2100 UTC thickening to 200 m with sky obscured by midnight.
  30. A mild, cloudy day with periods of drizzle and extensive low cloud. The fog lifted overnight, the visibility improving to 20 km during the morning, falling to 2000 m at times in moderate precipitation and lower stratus in the afternoon. Just before sunset there was a brief glimpse of the sun as it dropped below the SC edge visible to the SW. The wind, SW'ly throughout the day, increased F3-4 overnight and F4-5 by midday.
  31. A cloudy, mild day with light drizzle at times after light overnight rain. Visibility 15 km to 20 km with variable amounts of low stratus. The wind SW'ly at first and SW to WSW'ly later remained F4-5 in strength.
