Weather Diary - June 1999

  1. Relative humidity fell from 90% at 0955 to 69% at 1050 UTC, rising to 82% 1159 UTC. Wave-like formation in base of SC above and downwind of Fair Isle observed. 1253 UTC. stratus on the hill after 1830 UTC, gradually lowering with m - f 1930 - F 2100 UTC. Fog cleared by midnight.

  2. Stratus bank observed to east at 1759 UTC

  3. Rain from 0730 UTC, becoming moderate from 1600 UTC.

  4. Moderate precipitation at times overnight. Rain and drizzle ceased 0830 UTC. Fog from 1700 <200 m from 1730 UTC.

  5. Thick fog clearing to mist by 0500 UTC., by which time moderate rain and drizzle falling with extensive low stratus. Fog 0820 to 0930 UTC, stratus base then lifting slowly. Moderate rain and drizzle during the morning becoming moderate rain early afternoon and light from mid-afternoon.

  6. Overnight rain clearing0620 UTC. Showers developing during the afternoon. F6 NNE'ly wind slowly easing.

  7. Showers overnight becoming moderate rain during the morning, turning to rain and drizzle mid-morning and dying out early afternoon. low stratus becoming extensive, with fog from 1430 UTC, falling to <200 m at times in the evening.

  8. Overnight fog clearing to adjacent fog, persisting until late morning. Low stratus returning late afternoon, lowering to give fog during the evening.

  11. Fog late evening.

  12. Fog, visibility <200 m at times, clearing to fog patches 0615 UTC. 0635 UTC 'fog shadow' effect visible to the south of Fair Isle - visibility 5km with adjacent fog to west and east and fog to the north rolling over the Hill (showing laminar flow) , West Cliffs and Sheep Rock. Rain, moderate at times during the morning , drizzle during the afternoon with extensive low stratus - visibility varying 500 m to 20 km. An improvement later with some evening sunshine.

  13. Early fog and drizzle. Visibility falling to <200 m 0710 - 0820 UTC, fog then clearing to mist 0935 UTC. A dry afternoon with glimpses of the sun. Stratus lowering and increasing after 2100 UTC with fog from 2135 UTC.

  14. Fog clearing by 0145 UTC. Rain 0530 - 1020, 1135, becoming moderate at times during the afternoon then turning to rain and drizzle or drizzle - again moderate at times with low stratus becoming extensive and fog 1520 - fog patches 1635 UTC. Following a period of heavy rain and drizzle 1600 - 1700 UTC a clearance followed from the west with a sunny evening.

  15. A fine sunny day. Increasing cloud during the evening with a moderate partial halo.

  16. Variable amounts of low stratus with periods rain and drizzle during the morning. Brighter with intermittent precipitation around the middle of the day and moderate rain mid-afternoon becoming heavy 1407 - 1420 UTC. Wind veer 170° at 1345 UTC to 220° at 1415 UTC.

  17. Some overnight showers. Fine, sunny day with thermal CU HUM over and downwind of the isle.

  18. Some intermittent rain during the morning, turning to continuous rain and drizzle by midday with mist and extensive low stratus developing. Fog 1315 - 1410 UTC and 1835 - 1930 UTC. Rain and drizzle becoming intermittent after mid-afternoon.

  19. Overnight rain and drizzle, occasionally moderate, with low stratus giving fog at times. Brighter and drier for a time then further mainly light rain and drizzle late morning, becoming continuous moderate rain through the afternoon with extensive low stratus - the F3-4 S'ly wind steadily backing F2-3 ENE'ly. Fog patches from 1720 UTC with fog during the evening with further heavy rain - the wind continuing to back to be F5 NNW'ly by midnight.

  20. Overnight rain and drizzle then scattered showers.

  21. Overnight showers then dry.

  22. A fine clear day with excellent visibility of 8o km by the afternoon.

  23. Another fine, clear day with 80 km visibility. Station inspection [Edinburgh]

  24. Fine and clear overnight with a trace of NOCTILUCENT CLOUD observed (CI-like pale lilac) at azimuth 040° and elevation about 15° (level with the top of Ward Hill). Cloudy by morning with some light showery rain. A dry, bright afternoon with further rain, moderate at times, during the evening. Visibility falling from an early 80km to 1500 m by the end of the day.

  25. A dry, bright and misty day with varying amounts of thin low stratus.

  26. A fine and clear, though hazy, day.

  27. A bright, clear start to the day. Some light drizzle later in the afternoon as stratus increases. Cloud gradually lowering to give fog by 2130 UTC. Heavy rain late evening.

  28. Some mainly light rain and drizzle overnight with low stratus giving fog. Fog and drizzle clearing after 0700 UTC to give a fine, sunny end to the morning. A sunny afternoon, becoming misty later with increasing stratus producing fog by 2205 UTC.

  29. A showery morning followed by a dry, warm and sunny afternoon. Light rain during the evening becoming moderate later.

  30. A dull misty start to the day with periods of moderate rain or rain and drizzle during the morning turning to showers early in the afternoon. Partly cloudy for a time in the late afternoon. Rain and drizzle, with low stratus from 1900 UTC, precipitation becoming moderate with fog for a time from 2015 UTC as stratus base lowered.
