Thick or dense fog all night. Fog thinning vertically with sun's disk visible 0840 UTC, clearing to mist 0930 UTC. Visibility slowly improving to 20 km in haze by late afternoon with nil cloud. Becoming misty later in the evening. A fine, warm day. A fine, clear and warm day. A fine, clear night. 0555 UTC fog bank sweeping in from the NE. jf - fp 0600 UTC - f 0604 UTC -- F 0610 UTC - f 0715 UTC. 0725 UTC an aircraft reported becoming visual with Sumburgh "just abeam of Fair Isle". Fog lifting into stratus at 200 ft by 0800 UTC. Cloud base then lifting to 700 ft by 1300 UTC with a visibility of 12 km. Stratus then temporarily breaking to 2 okta, but returning to 7 okta by 1800 UTC. A much cooler day - Fair Isle lowest Tdmx in UK with 14.5° Celsius. Extensive SC sheet developing overnight breaking late morning to give a partly cloudy and sunny afternoon. Visibility 50 km with a cool F2-3 increasing F3-4 N to NE'ly wind. Continuing dry with good visibility and a cool F4-5 increasing F5-6 NE'ly wind. Another dry day with a cool F5-6 NE'ly breeze. 0430 UTC 4-masted barque Kurzenshtern SSW of the isle making slow progress (no sails) eastwards through a rough sea. 0600 UTC Kurzenshtern now bearing ESE. Dry, mainly cloudy with a cool F4-5 N'ly wind. Mostly clear overnight then cloudy or partly cloudy. A cool, showery F4 NNW airstream developing overnight, but with just one shower hitting the island at 0600 - 0610 UTC. Showery activity dying out during the afternoon, the wind easing F3-4 and backing NW'ly in the evening. 2230 UTC possible fireball reported to DW. 'wooshing' noise (like a rocket) overhead with a subsequent orange glow observed on the southern horizon. Cool and cloudy or partly cloudy with a F2-3 N to NW'ly wind and 60 km visibility. A few light showers overnight and at first during the morning. Sufficient breaks in the SC to observe the partial (60%) eclipse of the sun - via the reflection in a polarizing camera filter (photograph taken). During partial eclipse the appearance of sky, clouds etc rather like that seen through a polarizing filter - ie 'greyish'. Partly cloudy overnight, then cloudy (mostly CH, very little CL). F2-3 NW'N'ly wind veering NE'ly during the morning then ESE during the afternoon. CH thickening to CM late afternoon. A dry, cloudy night with 30 km visibility. Light rain from 0530 UTC, becoming moderate at times during the morning, the visibility falling to 1000 m by midday with extensive low stratus. Fog from 1205 UTC as stratus base lowered with rain and drizzle during the afternoon. Sky obscured during the evening with thick fog and mostly light rain and drizzle. Overnight fog clearing to 20 km visibility by 0600 UTC, although sea fog observed to the S/SE and W, this persisting until mid-morning. A mostly cloudy day. Cloudy and misty overnight. Mostly partly cloudy from 0600 UTC. F2-3 W'ly wind backing SSW'ly during the morning and SE'ly early afternoon. 2350 UTC - moderate aurora arch with rays. Cloudy or partly cloudy until mid-afternoon, sky then clearing. Shallow fog from 0100 with fog 0200 to fog patches 0430 UTC with fog to the SE at 0600 UTC rolling onto the island. Light shower 0630 - 0730 UTC. Fog then clearing and visibility improving to 50 km by the afternoon. 2350 UTC - moderate aurora arch and rays. Mostly clear until late morning with towering CU to NE developing into CB9 by 1230 UTC before decaying mid afternoon into CU/SC cloudsheet. Clear evening,. 2047 UTC - white fireball observed, track azimuth 110°/elevation 30° to 090°/15°. 2350 UTC - moderate aurora arch, curtains and rays. Clear becoming partly cloudy overnight, followed by a mainly cloudy day and partly cloudy evening. Light shower 1600 UTC. Mostly cloudy with an occasional very light shower and a F5-6 NE'N'ly wind slowly backing N'ly and easing F4-5 by evening. Mostly cloudy - CL in the morning and mainly CH through the afternoon - with a light shower around midday. A F4-5 N'ly wind backing and easing NW to NNW'ly F3-4 by evening. Cloudy becoming partly cloudy or mostly clear by afternoon and cloudy during the evening.F3-4 NW'ly wind easing F2-3 , then falling calm by evening. Visibility good at 60 km. A cloudy, dry day. Calm overnight then F2-3 WNW to NW'ly 2230 UTC (reported) moderate aurora arch with some curtains. A dry, cloudy or partly cloudy day, becoming mostly clear during the evening. F2-3 W'S'ly wind backing SSW'ly by same time. Good visibility. A fine, clear day with good visibility. Calm overnight, a S'ly f2-3 backing SE'ly and increasing F3-4 by evening. Cloudy overnight, low cloud breaking during the morning to give a sunny start to the afternoon. Thickening high cloud and then low cloud with rain from 1630 UTC. SE F4 backing E'S and increasing F5 during the afternoon. Visibility good at first, falling during the evening as low stratus became extensive. A wet night becoming foggy by 0600 UTC as stratus cloud base fell to station level. Moderate or heavy rain becoming light after 1000 UTC. Dry by 1100 UTC F5 E'S'ly wind easing F3 and veering SE'E'ly by 0900 UTC, easing F2-3 during the afternoon and veering SSW'ly late afternoon with fog thinning to mist during the evening. Misty overnight, visibility improving to 25 km by dawn. Light rain and drizzle with visibility falling to 5000 m 0652- 0820 UTC. Dry, cloudy afternoon. W to WSW'ly F4-5 winds. Mostly cloudy, some light drizzle 0700 - 0730 UTC with 25 km visibility falling to 4000 m. WSW'ly F4 backing SSW'ly and easing F3 late afternoon, backing SE'ly and increasing F4 during the evening. Mostly cloudy, some sunshine midday as lower cloud became broken, with a F5 S to SSE'ly wind. Increasing high cloud lowering to medium level with rain 1555 - 1930 UTC. Clear evening, SSE'ly F4 wind veering WSW and increasing F6. Rain by 0600 UTC continuing until early afternoon. SW to WSW'ly F5 easing F2-3 and then falling calm. Visibility improving 15 km to 30 km early afternoon, wind increasing N'ly F3-4. Fine, clear night with grass minimum of 1.1° Celsius. Increasing cloud with rain and drizzle from 0730 UTC and a misty morning with 30 km visibility falling to 2500 m. Stratus base lowering with fog from 1030 UTC. Becoming dry midday, fog lifting 1430 UTC as stratus base lifted above station level. Wind S'ly F3-4. Rain and drizzle during the evening with mist and extensive low stratus. |
