Weather Diary - October 1999
Frequent, heavy rain showers, with some hail overnight and F4-5 W to WSW'ly winds easing and backing F2-3 SSW'ly by midday. Further frequent heavy showers with some hail during the morning and afternoon. The the wind, continuing to back to be E'ly F3 by mid-afternoon, backing further and then increasing to be N'ly F3-4 by the end of the day. The showers tending to die out during the late afternoon to give a dry, clear evening. Visibility generally 8 - 15 km, but falling to 4000 m in the heavier showers and improving to 30 - 40 km as the showers died out. Moderate aurora - amorphous patches - observed at 2350 UTC. Clear at first, but cloudy by dawn with frequent showers. These continued for much of the day before becoming more scattered during the evening. A F4 N'ly wind backing NW'ly and increasing F5 by daw. Further increase during the morning with the NW'ly wind becoming gale F8 1430 - 1607 UTC, then a gradual easing to F6 for the evening. Mostly cloudy with showers continuing overnight - some moderate with hail. Showers less frequent during the morning and afternoon and becoming mostly dry by evening. A cool day with NW to NNW'ly F6-7 winds easing F5-6 during the afternoon and F4 by late evening. Visibility 20 - 25 km, reducing to 15 km in showers. An occasional shower overnight, the NW'ly wind continuing to ease to be F2-3 by morning. A dry though mainly cloudy morning, an occasional light shower from a 'mini' CB (ie, low freezing level) during the afternoon - the wind remaining becoming a F2-4 WNW to NW'ly. A dry, clear evening with the wind falling calm by midnight. Visibility 30 - 40 km. Fine, clear and calm in the early hours, but rain and drizzle with low stratus by 0500 UTC and a F1-3 SSW'ly wind. Visibility falling from 40 km to 4000 m in precipitation. A misty morning with further outbreaks of mainly light rain and drizzle followed by a dry, bright afternoon with visibility improving to 40 km as low stratus cleared to CM/CH with a small amount of CU2/SC5 and S to SSW'ly winds increasing F4-5. 0947 UTC a partial halo observed - but cloud appeared to be low AS rather than CS. S to SSW'ly wind increasing F5 with visibility falling to 15 km in modearate rain during the evening. Overnight rain clearing to showers during the morning, the wind veering F4 W to WNW'ly by 0600 UTC. Bright for a time and turning mild during the morning with increasing and thickening CH later. Intermittent light rain from CM commenced 1230 UTC and continued for much of the afternoon, the wind backing SSW'ly F4-5. A moderate shower at 1651 UTC, the wind increasing F6 and then veering WNW'ly by 1749 UTC. Further light showers during the evening, the wind F4-5 W to WNW'ly. Visibility 15 - 20 km, falling to 10 km in precipitation. Winds WSW to NW'W'ly F5 overnight easing F2-4 for the morning and afternoon. Generally cloudy with some clear or sunny intervals and scattered showers, mostly light but occasionaly moderate during the afternoon. A dry evening, the wind increasing F4 and veering NW'W'ly. Visibility around 25 km, falling to 6 km in the heaviest showers, improving 40 km for the evening. Scattered overnight showers dying out during the morning as the F4 NW'ly wind backed W'ly and then fell calm with an AS overcast by 0600 UTC. Light rain from soon after 1400 UTC, turning to rain and drizzle after1500 UTC with the visibility falling from 40 km to 3000 m by 1600 UTC as stratus developed. SE'ly wind increasing F4 by late afternoon, the visibility falling further as the ST base lowered, with fog from early evening in moderate drizzle and extensive low ST. Wind veering WSW'ly F4 late evening with the visibility improving to 10 km in light rain as the ST base lifted to 400 ft. Low stratus and rain - moderate at times - overnight, the F4 WSW'ly wind backing SSW'ly by 0600 UTC. Between 0440 - 0450 UTC the Davis WMII indicated a pressure fall from 1004.3 to 1003.0 mb, with a recovery to 1003.8 mb by 0500 UTC. (At 0600 UTC the Davis read 1003.2 mb, the station barometer 1004.0 mb) The rain ceased shortly after 0700 UTC. At 0915 UTC the wind veered SW'ly and increased from a mean of 17 kt to one of 24 kt. Visibility 10 - 12 km at first, improving to 20 - 25 km as the rain cleared. During the remainder of the day the wind was WSW'ly F5-6 with scattered showers and a little small hail during the evening. As the cloud became well broken later in the evening a strong aurora glow was observed at 2050 UTC. A very showery 24 hours - the showers dying out during the evening. The showers were frequent, often moderate and sometimes heavy with hail. During a period of heavy rain and hail 1118-1122 UTC during one shower flakes of almost completely melted snow (as well as hail and melted hail) were observed. WSW'ly F6-7 winds increased gale F8 0725 - 0735, 0808 - 0820, 0900 - 0920, 0940 - 1230 UTC. A gust of 61 kt was recorded at 1117 UTC. After midday the F6-7 wind veered WNW'ly, easing F5-6 during the evening. Visibility generally around 12 - 15 km, but falling to 2000 m in the heavier showers. The cloud became well broken during the evening, with a moderate aurora glow observed at 2350 UTC. Variable amounts of cloud overnight, the showers dying out by 0600 UTC. High cloud then increasing and thickening to AS with SC/CU and outbreaks of showery rain from 1000 UTC. Further light showers during the afternoon, the F5-6 W to WNW'ly easing F4 and backing WSW'ly after 1500 UTC. A dry first part to the evening, but rain and drizzle - moderate at times - from 2110 UTC, the wind backing SW'ly. Visibility generally 20 - 25 km, but falling to 12 km in precipitation. Cloudy overnight with periods of rain, F6 SW'ly winds and 12 - 15 km visibility. Becoming misty during the morning in rain and drizzle as ST base lowered, with fog (800 m) 0830 - 0840, 0900 - 0920 UTC as cloudbase fell to station level, the wind veering SW to WSW'ly and easing F5-6. Some weak sunshine visible on the sea to the south at 1045 UTC and a gradual lifting and breaking of the ST after 1130 UTC, the wind veering W to WNW'ly F5. Becoming dry by 1500 UTC. With well broken cloud during the evening a moderate aurora glow was observed at 2350 UTC. Becoming cloudy overnight with outbreaks of rain by 0600 UTC and 15 - 30 km visibility, the F4 WNW to NW'ly wind easing F2. After 0800 UTC as low ST became extensive and with periods of rain and drizzle - moderate at times - it became misty with the visibility varying from 800 - 5000 m. The F2 wind backed SSW'ly with the onset of the misty, drizzley conditions. Fog or fog patches with low stratus began to clear soon after midday and it became dry and bright with the ST lifting and breaking after 1300 UTC with a subsequent improvement in visibility to 25 km. A mild afternoon. With the improvement the wind veered F2-3 NNE'ly. A fine clear evening then followed, the wind veering F2 ESE'ly. At 2350 UTC a very strong auroral arch with some low rays was observed. This was still present at 0415 UTC. After a clear start (Rayed aurora arc visible at 0415 UTC), becoming cloudy by morning, though remaining mostly dry apart from a light 'drizzley' shower 1215 - 1225 UTC. Wind E'S'ly F2-3 during the morning, backing SE'ly and increasing F3-4 late afternoon. Outbreaks of drizzle during the evening. Visibility 30 km, falling to 15 km in drizzle. Mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light drizzle reducing the 30 km visibility to 12 km at times. F3-4 S to SE'ly winds backing SE'ly and increasing F4 during the evening. A dry day with small amounts of ST/CU and a SC sheet breaking for a time mid-morning and again during the evening. F4-5 SE'ly winds. A clear evening, but no aurora observed. Continuing dry - some adjacent precipitation visible at times. Mostly small amounts of CU1 building to CU2 in the afternoon, varying amounts of SC and also CI. F4 SE'ly winds easing F3-4 and backing E'ly by the end of the afternoon. 20 - 35 km visibility. Cloudy or partly cloudy. Dry apart from one very light ('a few drops') shower 1320 - 1330 UTC and another during the evening. F3-4 E'ly wind veering SE - SE'E'ly and increasing F4 during the afternoon.40 - 60 km visibility. Fine and clear by midnight - no aurora observed. A fine, clear night followed by a sunny morning. ESE'ly winds increasing F5 overnight. 0920 UTC CU2 to east, producing precipitation, showing a fibrous top c4500 ft. Showers, occasionaly moderate and reducing the 30 km visibility to as low as 10 km, developing early afternoon continuing for the rest of the day. Cloudy or partly cloudy at first with showers and a F4 SE'E'ly wind increasing F5-6 and F6 at times. SC cloudshett becoming extensive during the afternoon, the showers tending to die out.and the SE'E'ly wind a steady F6, backing E'S'ly later.. 20 - 30 km visibility during the morning falling to 15 - 18 km during the afternoon in haze. A cloudy, dry evening. A cloudy day, persistent rain and drizzle, moderate at times, from about 0500 UTC. ST lowering onto Ward Hill during the afternoon, the visibility falling to 3000 m. The E'S'ly wind increasing F6-7 overnight. Becoming dry after 1600 UTC, the wind veering SE'ly and easing F5. Remaing cloudy, the ST base lifting to 800 ft and the visibility improving to 10 km. An overcast, misty day with low ST. Periods of rain and drizzle, moderate at times, persisting until late afternoon. Visibility falling from 10 - 15 km to 2000 - 5000 m in precipitation. Wind E'S to ESE'ly F5-6 increasing F6 during the afternoon then veering SE'ly as the rain and drizzle died out with a clearance appearing to the SW at 1720 UTC. Further outbreaks of light rain later in the evening, the wind easing F4. Cloudy overnight with some light rain and early fog clearing at approximately 0400 UTC. A cloudy day with further outbreaks of rain or drizzle bringing ST onto Ward Hill during the morning and again later in the afternoon. Visibility 8 - 15 km. ESE'ly F4 wind veering SE'ly during the morning, backing E'ly through the evening. Overnight rain followed by an overcast, misty day with rain and drizzle persistent for much of the time. Visibility of 8 - 15 km during the morning and 2500 m to 15 km during the afternoon and falling to 800 m in fog 1415 - 1440 UTC as the ST base fell to station level. F4 E'ly winds gradually backing and NNW'ly by evening. Cloudy overnight with 15 km visibility, periods of light rain, drizzle or rain and drizzle and F4 NW'ly winds. Becoming brighter and drier from the north after 1030 UTC, the NW'ly wind freshening F5 for a time before easing F4 by midday. The cloud becoming broken with some sunshine after 1500 UTC, the visibility improving to 30 km. CI/CS - slight halo at 2100 UTC - thickening to AS during the evening, the wind easing F2-3 and backing SSW'ly. F3 SSW'ly wind increasing F5 and backing S'ly with rain, arriving overnight, persisting all day - the S'ly wind veering SSW'ly and increasing F5-6 and veering WSW'ly late evening. The early 30 km visibility falling to 10 km by dawn and to 2000 m - 6 km in moderate (heavy 1135 - 1140 UTC) precipitation and low ST for much of the time. Becoming drier and much brighter overnight with scattered showers and broken cloud by 0600 UTC, the wind veering F7 W'S'ly and visibility improving to 15 - 20 km. Showers, becoming more frequent and heavier during the morning reducing visibility to 4000 m at times. A drier afternoon with well broken cloud, scattered light showers and a W'ly wind easing F. Further scattered mainly light showers (moderate 1835 - 1840 UTC) during the evening, the wind backing SW'ly and easing F5. 1815 UTC: moderate aurora arch with short 'squat' rays elevation 20° to 30° and long, narrow and faint rays azimuth 270° to 360° extending to the overhead. Scattered showers dying out overnight with a dry day following. After a brief burst of dawn sunshine 0740 - 0750 UTC it was a cloudy day with an AS/AC overcast. Visibility 25 km, wind F5 SW'ly increasing F6 and backing SSW'ly during the morning. Overnight rain and drizzle, moderate at times, becoming intermittent after 0625 UTC, ceased shortly after 0900 UTC. Early visibility of 20 km falling to 2200 m in precipitation and low ST improving to 6 km mid-morning as precipitation ceased and low ST broke to AS/AC. Low ST returning during the afternoon, the visibility falling to 1500 m in persistent light drizzle. F6 S'ly wind increasing F7 and backing SSE to SE'ly during the morning with further increase to gale F8 1255 - 1305 and 1455 - 1520 UTC. Becoming drier during the evning with the cloud becoming well broken with 8 km visibility in haze by midnight. A dry, partly cloudy night with cloud soon increasing after 0600 UTC with rain, moderate at times, from 0805 - 1140 and 1158 - 1220 UTC. A F7 S'ly wind veering SSW'ly overnight, increasing gale F8 0655 UTC and to severe gale F9 1240 - 1305, 1325 - 1405 UTC. One or two light showers early afternoon then dry with well broken cloud and a visibility of 6 - 12 km in haze. Becoming cloudy with SC late evening. The gale eased F7 at 1537 UTC. Gust to 61 kt at 1346 UTC. Moderate aurora glow observed at 2050 UTC.
