Formed in 1982, the Shetland Knitwear Trades Association ( SKTA ) is the trade body that represents Shetland 's knitwear manufacturers. The aim of the association is to protect and promote genuine Shetland Knitwear and to provide a first contact point for those wishing to make direct contact with Shetland based knitwear manufacturers.

Unfortunately, ' Shetland ' is now used to promote (often inferior quality) knitwear produced outwith the islands. With this in mind, the association has it's own ' Shetland Lady ' trademark (available only to members) which guarantees that the knitwear has been produced in Shetland, and a quality assurance program designed to maintain the highest standards.
